BACKGROUND / CONCEPT
What started as a concept from last year, inspired by summer campouts – the Sunset Campout (offsite link, opens in new tab) specifically in Northern California in Belden Town on the Feather River when Josh Wink played a mind blowing set. His music was so mature. So deep. So psychedelic. The vocal samples — which I didn’t attempt to recreate here — were mindblowing.
After the fact, I scoured the internet trying to find the specific vocals I thought I remembered hearing. Something about the auditory cortex and being connected to the nervous system and the brain… It took a while but when it finally struck me that the sounds were words that were weaving their own way into my own brain through my very auditory cortex. The parallel there and revelation was profound.
I found a few of his recent tracks and purchased one on Beatport. The production is still super clean, dynamic and very evolved. So, I had to try and make something like it. This Minx track is one of the products of that experiment. Specifically here the percussion groove sits nicely and the tops are bright and sizzle unabashedly. Very acid-inspired. But not exactly. It’s got my spin, a different take. But the seed is Josh Wink blowing my mind at a summer campout in 2024. Mystik + Wink = Minx!
Originally recorded on Synthstrom Deluge in summer of 2024, this got picked up again recently because the length of it matched an upcoming project I had and it made a decent soundtrack.

MINX AS SOUNDTRACK
The very reason Minx is now available is that I was using it for a recent video project for my design consulting business PERSONE DESIGN and was doing a blog post about the video project called From Vacation to Video: A Creative Journey In Media Production. While I was editing the video, I noticed there was a lot of noise or ground hum in my recording. This is a result of a former setup I had in place which had a ground loop or a faulty connection somewhere that left most of my recent recordings — granted just 2 track audio demo recordings of live projects and performances from my Synthstrom Deluge — but still, many of my later recordings have some trace of this. i only discovered it by listening to the video through my AirPods, but then — sure enough.
RE-RECORDED, BETTER THAN EVER
That would not do. Not at all. So I found my Monoprice 615809 Mixer with 2 channel USB input and stripped the Deluge from it’s live performance rig, setting them both up in a “focus mode” at my desk. Once I had the right project, I had to figure out how it was arranged because a simple recording of what I had in my sections with follow actions was not accurate. I had to actually figure out what I had done on the recording and do that again live for the new recording. Most importantly with this new mixer, the setup did *not* have any ground loop noise or hum!
So, after recording a few times, messing it up and having to re-record it over and over. I finally got it. I even saved a new project. However before I saved the project with the new arrangement actually recorded into the Deluge’s arranger, (I got distracted and since I had the USB plugged into the mixer for audio capture, the battery ran out on my Deluge and I lost the recorded arrangement… Doh!
But I captured it in Ableton Live where I arranged it all, and ran it through some leveling plugins before exporting it. Then I brought it into Logic for a basic mastering pass, et voilà!

Most recently I decided since I did all the effort to make sure it was such a clean re-recording, I may as well go the distance. At least as far as publishing and releasing it on my own website, with Bandcamp publishing tbd.
One of my goals — and shared goals with my brother in our joint music project Mystik Luminate — is for the publishing to be once then done, not having to renew it yearly by subscription. Also, we want to retain our copyright of the material as well as some visibility into the overall performance, sales and earnings of the music we release. In previous “deals” we have not found this to be the case. Sure it’s a partnership and the label gets something for exposing my/our music to a larger scene. But, we still want what we want, especially the copyright and a full ownership stake in the proceeds.
